40 Billion Tomatoes. One HEINZ Standard. Meet the Growers Behind Your Favorite Ketchup.

Every bottle of HEINZ Tomato Ketchup starts with a single proprietary tomato seed, grown by a global network of dedicated partners. From a fifth-generation family farm in California's Central Valley to regenerative fields in Extremadura, and precision operations in Goias, this is the story of the people who grow and harvest 40 billion tomatoes to one uncompromising standard, season after season.

KraftHeinz Harvest

Key Takeaways:

  • HEINZ tomatoes are grown from proprietary seed varieties developed exclusively for HEINZ Tomato Ketchup — selected for flavor, color, and texture.
  • 40 billion tomatoes are harvested annually across a global network of Kraft Heinz grower partners.

Every year, nearly 40 billion tomatoes are grown to one HEINZ standard. It starts with a proprietary tomato seed and more than 150 years of tomato expertise. These aren't ordinary tomatoes. The HEINZ tomato has been perfected over generations to deliver the thickness, bright red color and rich, balanced flavor that defines HEINZ Tomato Ketchup.

But great tomatoes don't come from great seeds alone. Kraft Heinz works hand in hand with growers, many through trusted, multi-generational partnerships, to grow tomatoes that meet the brand's exacting standards season after season. Together, generations of farming knowledge, agricultural innovation and a shared commitment to quality help ensure every bottle starts with the right ingredients.

Within hours of harvest, tomatoes are processed into paste to help preserve their signature color and quality. Behind the scenes, Kraft Heinz's Tomato Masters work closely with growers and processing partners across the supply chain, using their expertise to help ensure every batch meets HEINZ standards for flavor, color and consistency.

This harvest season, meet a few of the growers who help bring the HEINZ standard to life year after year.

California, USA: Five Generations of Quality

The Beeman family has farmed Yolo County since the 1850s — and for more than 50 of those years, their tomatoes have carried the HEINZ name.

Tim Beeman is the fifth generation to work this land, running a diversified operation across Yolo, Solano, and Sutter counties that grows everything from almonds and wheat to cucumbers and sunflowers alongside tomatoes. Many of the staff have been with the family for decades. "Employees become like family," Tim says — a phrase that means something different when your own family has been doing this for 170 years.

California's climate is part of what makes Bullseye Farms' tomatoes exceptional. Long, hot days and cool nights allow fruit to ripen evenly and develop the rich flavor and high natural sugar content the HEINZ standard demands. During harvest, a fast-paced, 24-hour operation kicks off each early summer where crews, equipment, and processing partners move in sync to get tomatoes from field to factory at peak ripeness, every single day until the season closes.

"Knowing that the fruit we've tended to for generations ends up on millions of dinner tables around the world gives our daily work a deeper purpose,” says Beeman. “We aren't just farming — we are a vital link in a long legacy of quality and tradition that people have trusted every single day for over 150 years."

Extremadura, Spain: Innovating with Nature

In Extremadura, farming is a way of life. For Manuel Vázquez, it's also become a laboratory.

What his father started in 1976 as a small family operation in the village of Villafranco de Guadiana is now one of the region’s largest employers, producing around 180,000 tons of HEINZ tomatoes per year. Manuel has been CEO since 2010, running the business alongside his brothers.

About 20 years ago, his team began planting cover crops — crops grown between tomato seasons to protect and restore the field before the next harvest. Over time, that simple shift helped make the soil healthier and more productive, improve yields and encourage neighboring farms to try the same approach. Since then, the operation has continued finding smarter ways to care for the land, from underground drip irrigation and sensors that show when fields need water to tools that help predict pests before they become a problem. Even tomato stalks are now put to use as animal feed and compost.

"We've been on a real journey — combining the best of modern technology with ancient farming practices to deliver positive impact in and off the field,” says Vázquez.

More than 22 years into his partnership with Kraft Heinz, Vázquez measures success the same way he always has. He says, "For us, quality comes down to three things: consistency, great taste and producing food in harmony with nature."

Goiás, Brazil: A Journey of Continuous Improvement

Few people have witnessed the evolution of tomato growing in Brazil as closely as grower Fábio Alves.

When he first began working in tomato fields in the late 1990s, planting, spraying and harvesting were labor-intensive processes that relied heavily on manual work. Technology was limited, yields were lower and many tasks required significantly more time and resources than they do today.

Today, his operation uses advanced GPS technology, modern irrigation systems, precision equipment and state-of-the-art harvesting machinery to produce more than double the daily volume once possible.

"What makes growing tomatoes here unique is the care taken with the crop and my team's dedication," he says. "Without this essential care, it would be impossible to deliver the best tomatoes in Brazil."

Fábio credits Kraft Heinz’s Grower Excellence Program and long-term partnership approach with helping support continuous improvements on the farm. But for him, innovation is as much about people as technology. A performance-based rewards program encourages team members to take ownership of results, helping reinforce a culture of excellence across the operation.

"What makes me most proud is knowing that our team plays a part in creating HEINZ products and that together with the brand we put a quality product on the shelf for consumers," he says.

Growing Better, Together

Whether it's a fifth-generation family farm in California, regenerative agriculture in Spain, or precision farming in Brazil, each harvest tells a different story.

Together, they reflect a shared commitment to quality, innovation and continuous improvement and they help ensure that every bottle of HEINZ Tomato Ketchup delivers the rich taste and quality consumers have trusted for 157 years.
